A New Year’s Resolution in July

So many of us start a new year with goals and resolutions that are long-gone by February. We’re halfway through the year and by now most people have broken their resolutions. That’s why it’s important to make a resolution for your LIFE, not for the New Year. I wanted to check in with you and see how you’re doing on your resolution, and give you one piece of advice for achieving your goals for 2015 and beyond. Whatever your goal is, I’m sure it can be achieved by boycotting balance.

1. Work/life balance is overrated. There, I said it.

When we think of work/life balance, we picture a perfectly straight scale with WORK on one side and BALANCE on the other. This is a dated idea and an optical illusion, to boot.

2. Being a working mom is not a crime, so we shouldn’t feel guilty for it.

Our work makes us better mothers. It shows our children how to work hard and persevere. Let’s show them that this can be done with grace and joy, not stress and guilt.

3. Balance is not one-size-fits-all.

You must create your own version of what works. This is when you will truly find a harmonious way to take care of the many things you tackle each day.

4. Remember, doing your best is always good enough.

So I challenge you to boycott balance this year, and do it one day at a time. For the month of July, don’t think of balance or use the word itself. Just do what works for you.

5. Accept help, don’t compromise yourself and actually enjoy each day.

You will make it to some recitals, and you will miss some soccer games. It’s okay. You will continue to be a working mom and you will continue to be great. The less stress you add to the equation, the happier you – and your family – will be.

I bet you’ll notice a huge, positive difference in how you feel and act by the end of the month. Are you up for the challenge?
